What Are the Most Popular Puppy Breeds?

Some dog breeds will always be more popular than others. However, there are times when some breeds enjoy a peak in popularity.

Here we take a look at some of the most popular breeds of puppy throughout the UK today.

#1: The Labrador retriever

This is a great family dog and has always been very popular in the UK. According to data examined by the BBC earlier this year, it is the top dog by quite some distance. The BBC used data collected from microchipping companies over a period of 10 years.

#2: The Jack Russell

The second most popular breed was the Jack Russell. This has been the case throughout the past few years. It is a small and stocky breed that is quite resilient.

#3: The Staffordshire bull terrier

This came in slightly behind the Jack Russell, snagging third place as it did so. The dog is a cross between a terrier and a bulldog.

What about the top three based on The Kennel Club registrations?

The Kennel Club registers pure-bred puppies in the UK. Their top three actually worked out somewhat differently to the top three according to microchipping information. Perhaps this will change in 2016 when microchipping your puppy or dog becomes compulsory.

In any event, the top three as per The Kennel Club are as follows. We’ll do these in reverse order so you may want to provide your own drumroll!

#3: English springer spaniel

Were you expecting a spaniel in the mix? This breed is well-known for having endless amounts of energy. You can also look forward to a relatively-easy time training this breed.

#2: Cocker spaniel

Another change here compared to the list we had above. This is a stunning dog, with signature floppy ears and very loyal to their favourite person in the family!

#1: the Labrador

This is where the original list doesn’t change. The dog may come top in the UK but this is true of dog owners in other countries as well, who have also ensured this dog is number one. With proper training they can develop into a wonderful family dog.

What about other popular breeds?

There has been a trend in people searching online for information on certain breeds in the past year or two. Among the breeds popping up most often in these searches is the German shepherd, the Cavalier King Charles spaniel and the Lhasa Apso. Cockapoos are also often searched for, and they are arguably among the more popular cross-breeds in the UK today. The name comes from the fact that this puppy is a cross between a cocker spaniel and a poodle.

As you can see, it might be worth looking at the most popular puppy breeds in the UK today if you are thinking of getting a puppy. With that said though, you should also make sure the breed you choose is right for your lifestyle, your home and your family. Don’t choose a breed simply because a lot of other people have done so before you.
